ITH Tutorial

I no longer deem this tutorial as a Newbie Guide. It's not really complicated but I only advise this for quite advanced players. If you're thinking of playing your first Japanese game using this, hold that thought. I recommend you to play a visual novel with an English patch first. But if you're really stubborn... Ah, well.

ITH or Interactive Text Hooker is a program that helps hook text from Japanese games.  The extracted text are sent to translation engines (Atlas Fujitsu) or e-dictionaries. In common words, it's an important tool to play Japanese games because without it, you can't get the text. Unless you know how to read Japanese.

I discarded the idea of making an AGTH (Anime Game Text Hooker) Tutorial.  ITH serves the same function as AGTH but with easier processes. ITH automatically adds the H-codes of most modern games without the trouble of placing it on the the game's target line. ITH can also recognize most game engines. Another advantage, ITH can insert multiple hooks while in AGTH, you can have one. Blah, blah, blah.. I half-bet you don't care about what I'm saying but in shorter words, it's waaaaayy easier to use than AGTH.

If you're satisfied with that, read on for the tutorial. And yes, it's complete with screenshots.

● First, double-click ITH.exe. In my screenshot, you will see that I have created a shortcut. You can also do that if you hate the idea of going through multiple folders just to open ITH. If you have a shortcut, you need two clicks and you got it.

● Next, open the Japanese game you want to play.
I swear, that's a Japanese game (although a patch exists). I could have used Starry Sky ~in Summer~ but decided against it. This is a spoiler for the next game I'm featuring, The Second Reproduction.

● Click the Process tab, find your game, click Attach and then OK.

This will show when you have attached your game.

● Now that you've hooked the game, open your translation engine. I use Translation Aggregator because of DevOSD (which I will teach later on).

● Play the game. When you've come across a dialogue, go back to ITH and click the down-arrow button. This will display a menu with a bunch of options. Choose the one that copies the text in the game once. If it display multiple times, you'll know that it's the wrong one.

The correct one should be like this. It's the same, right?

● Now, you have to make it that it automatically copies to the translator. Click the Option tab and check the second box beside Auto copy to clipboard. Click OK.

● Just wait for the Translator to translate it. And you're done. I can't teach you how to add /h codes because I'm not really good at that part. I really can't teach things I half-understand.
Word-per-word translation. I know right? But you have no choice if you want to play a Japanese game. Just use your understanding.

If you want this, use DevOSD. Just not for The Second Reproduction because an English Patch for this exists.

  2. Hm? I think your ITH is corrupted. Try downloading from another source.

  4. Hm... Copy or Ctrl+C the extracted text in ITH. Paste or Ctrl+V that to the clipboard of Translator Aggregator. That should work.
Tell me if there's more problem, 'kay?

  6. Did you try all the options from the dropdown console menu? Try all of them and choose the most appropriate one. Also, can you tell me what game you're using? Some games need hook codes. I might be able to help.

  8. Oh, I played that game. That game needs a hook code. I don't usually refer other sites but I'll make an exception because they know how to explain about hook codes. I can't. I'm not good at explaining things I half-understand so just look at this.

  11. Oh and I forgot to mention, use TAhelper with that. It solved my problems with the repeating names.

  13. @Aruvi Mizuki
You mean, even after manually pasting the extracted Japanese text to the translator, it didn't translate? At all? Have you used TAHelper already? If not, I recommend that you try that first. If all else fail, try Atlas Fujitsu v.14.

  14. Thank you for your help sasugasugoi-san. It already translated although some words not translated properly. Abou TAHelper, i don't understand at all how to use it. can you tell me? once again thank you very much. :)

I don't usually give links from other sites but, oh well, I'll make an exception because I haven't made a Translator Aggregator Helper Tutorial.
    Here:

Just learn from that for the time being. Well, if you want to wait for my tutorial, just be patient. I'll try to make one and post it as soon as possible.

  16. Hello :) (again)

I've tried you tutorial and some others, but I come accross the same problem each time: when clicking the down arrow button, I have no choice. Here's a screenshot to show you : http://i13.servimg.com/u/f13/17/85/32/03/proble10.jpg
I just totally suck with computers and all so there's probably something I'm doing wrong :\. I'd be really happy if you could help me with that :).

And thanks a lot for your tutorial !

    1. Oh, I see what's your problem. You tried to attach the wrong program. Were you trying to play a japanese NDS game by mounting it in DeSmuME? Emulators make a bridge for game formats to make it playable in PC platform. Unfortunately, ITH can only hook texts directly from the program attached, which is to say, ITH was trying to hook text from the emulator itself and not the game. You can only hook games meant for PC platform and not those games played using emulators. I'm sad about that fact as well. :'(

  17. Oh I see, I thought about that but since I did not see it written anywhere, I thought it would work :). Well anyway, thank you for your time ! Got to play the Second Reproduction thanks to you and I really liked it :D !

  18. When I attach it to my game for the first few lines all the symbols come up on ITH, but after that only one or two a line transfer over to ITH... do you know what I'm doing wrong?

    1. Sure. Maybe your game's hook code is not enough. Try the other options from the drop-down menu and maybe you'll see the correct one.

  19. Hello there! I am 'trying' to play the game as other people mentioned here Kuro to Kin no Hirakanai Kagi. I installed the patch, copied the files needed and the text doesnt match on ITH. I know I am supposed to use a hook code which I got but I cannot really use it? When I go to 'profile' is completely different there is no option to add the code..I am sure I got the right version also:) So y dunno whats wrong really.
    Thank you in advance!

    1. hullo. Sorry for the late reply.
EH?! No option? You should see the one with the Hook 1 checkbox? Place the hook code there.

      Reply back ASAP.

    2. Can I ask you where did you get the patch ? I am looking for it everywhere but I did not find it .

  20. i don't get it does this translate the game with out a patch or something?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Nope. It won't translate anything without an e-translator program. This is just for hooking texts, not translating.

  21. Why is the ITH always not responding when I open it??

    1. Define your "ITH always not responding" problem. That's too stingy for a description. :>

  22. Hello, sasugasugoi-san. I have a problem with ITH. When i attach my game, it already said Attach ITH to process successfully. But when i get back to ITH, there was only: "Inject process XXX. Module base XXXXXXXX" and nothing else. Click the down arrow button, I have no choice. And i went back to the Process tab, my game didn't attach yet(the Attach bottom was still there). Of course the Translation Aggregator didn't translate. Please help me, sasugasugoi-san! Thank you very much(and sorry about my bad English)
